EMERALD HORIZON (IMO 9638862) detained at Tianjin, October 2026

The 207,664 dwt capesize bulker EMERALD HORIZON was detained at Tianjin on 10 October 2026, marking the vessel's fifth PSC detention since delivery in 2013 and its third in the past three years. Managed by NYK Shipmanagement and classed by ClassNK throughout her career, the vessel's detention record has accelerated sharply since 2023 under a pattern that will concern charterers and underwriters operating in Australian and Chinese waters.

The detention

EMERALD HORIZON was detained at the port of Tianjin, China, on 10 October 2026. The detention was recorded under the Tokyo MoU regime. The vessel's ISM manager is listed as NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd of Singapore, with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) as recognised organisation. The specific deficiency codes and count for this detention have not yet been published. At the time of the report, AIS data showed the vessel at 11.1 metres draught in the China Coast area, with a stated destination of Changzhou.

The vessel

EMERALD HORIZON is a capesize bulk carrier built in 2013 at COSCO Dalian Shipyard in China. At 106,248 GT and 207,664 dwt, with a length overall of 300 metres and a beam of 50 metres, she sits firmly in the large capesize bracket. The vessel has been classed by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) since delivery on 27 June 2013. She was originally registered under the Panama flag and reflagged to Japan in July 2023. The vessel name has never changed. She is 13 years old, approaching the age at which capesize tonnage faces increased PSC scrutiny, though she is not yet in the high-age bracket by industry standards.

Inspection history

The inspection record tells a clear story of deterioration. Over 26 PSC inspections between April 2014 and April 2026, the vessel accumulated four detentions prior to the current Tianjin event, with 31 total deficiencies recorded. Critically, the pace of detentions has accelerated. From delivery through early 2023, a span of nearly ten years, the vessel had just one detention: at Lianyungang, China, in April 2016 with four deficiencies. The period from September 2023 onwards is a different picture entirely. The vessel was detained at Jiangyin in September 2023 with five deficiencies. Then in April 2026, she was detained at Port Hedland twice within two days, on 20 April under the Indian Ocean MoU and again on 21 April under the Tokyo MoU, each recording five deficiencies. Both were followed by same-day or next-day follow-up inspections clearing the vessel. Port Hedland features prominently throughout the record, reflecting a capesize trading pattern centred on the Australian iron ore trade. Earlier AMSA inspections at Port Hedland in 2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020, and February 2023 all returned zero deficiencies. The contrast with the April 2026 double detention at the same port is stark. Including the current Tianjin detention, the vessel now has five detentions in total, three of them since September 2023. That is a rate charterers and underwriters should treat as a red flag, particularly given the vessel's relatively young age.

Ownership and management

The vessel's commercial manager has been Meiji Shipping Co Ltd of Tokyo since delivery in June 2013, providing continuity on the commercial side. Meiji's fleet numbers 13 vessels. ISM management, however, changed in April 2023, when NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd of Singapore took over from MMS Bulkship Management SNG, which had held the ISM role since November 2013. NYK Shipmanagement operates a fleet of 144 vessels. Registered ownership shifted in July 2023 from Kumiai Navigation Pte Ltd to Ougi Ship Holding LLC, the latter registered care of Meiji Shipping in Tokyo. The flag change from Panama to Japan occurred in the same month. The timeline is notable: the ISM manager changed in April 2023, the ownership and flag changed in July 2023, and the vessel's first detention in seven years followed in September 2023 at Jiangyin. Since the transition to NYK Shipmanagement, the vessel has been detained three times prior to the current event.

Risk profile

VesselScore rates EMERALD HORIZON at 58.4 out of 100, placing her in the "above average risk" calibration band with an estimated detention probability of 5.86%. The dominant risk driver is the detention history component (c2), which scores the maximum 20 out of 20 penalty points. The deficiency rate component (c1) adds 7.9 of a possible 15 points. The age baseline contributes 5.9 of 10 points, reflecting a 13-year-old hull. Severity mix (c3) is moderate at 3.3 of 10 points, and manager churn (c4) registers at 2.5 of 15 points, reflecting the 2023 ISM change. Flag and class risk (c5) is low at 2.0 of 10, consistent with Japan flag and ClassNK. The vessel shows no sanctions exposure, no casualty record, and clean AIS behaviour. The score, however, predates the current Tianjin detention. Once this event is incorporated, the detention component will remain at its ceiling and the deficiency rate will increase further, pushing the score higher.

What to watch

The immediate question is the release timeline and whether China MSA will require a follow-up inspection at Tianjin before allowing the vessel to proceed. With an ETA to Changzhou listed as 14 October, the vessel's operators appear to be planning onward transit to another Chinese port. Charterers should note that three detentions in three years will place this vessel firmly in the priority targeting profile for AMSA, China MSA, and any Tokyo MoU authority. The next Port Hedland call, given the vessel's capesize trading pattern, is virtually certain to draw a detailed inspection. Underwriters and charterers should request an updated condition report and verify that all certificates have been renewed following the 2023 flag change from Panama to Japan; the most recent certificate data visible in the record dates from a February 2023 inspection and many certificates listed had expiry dates of June or November 2023.
