A large tanker has caught fire off the coast of Sochi, Russia, with satellite thermal data and numerous social media videos confirming a significant blaze and an apparent oil spill on the water's surface.

Multiple videos circulating on Russian social media channels show the vessel clearly visible from shore. The footage sequence begins with a substantial fire centered on the cargo tanks amidships, followed by visible signs of burning oil spreading aft along the starboard side. Subsequent images and video depict a large pool of burning oil on the sea surface aft of the vessel, accompanied by a towering column of black smoke.

Vessel Identification

Initial reports suggest the casualty vessel is likely the Aframax Rio, a 2004-built Aframax tanker that Ukraine has previously sanctioned for alleged involvement in Russian crude exports. Marine traffic tracking platforms last detected the vessel on Monday at a position just off the coast of Sirius, a small coastal settlement to the southeast of Sochi, according to reporting by The Maritime Executive.

NASA's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) has recorded a large, intense heat signature to the west of Sochi, located well to the northwest of the Aframax Rio's last tracked position.

Cause Remains Unclear

The cause of the fire has not been determined. Russian war reporting channel ExileNova+ reported that there were no air raid sirens and no sounds of explosions prior to the outbreak of the fire. As of the time of reporting, Ukraine has not claimed responsibility for any attack on the vessel, and it remains unclear whether the casualty was accidental or combat-related.

Vessel Background and Trade Profile

AIS tracking data provided by Pole Star Global indicates that the Aframax Rio primarily serves Russian oil terminals in the Baltic and Black Sea, making deliveries to India and East Asia. Ukraine's government added the vessel to its "shadow fleet" sanctions list in February 2026. Despite this designation, the tanker is operated by Western firms and maintains a profile typical of a compliant tanker engaged in the trade of price cap-approved Russian crude oil, according to The Maritime Executive.
